What isBackpacking? Some people have the notion that backpacking is about carrying your backpack everywhere, walking miles and miles each day toting the backpack- similar to backpacking in the woods. Sometimes it can be that way, but usually backpacking involves various modes of transportation and carrying the backpack for just short distances, for example, from a bus depot to a hotel. The essence of backpacking is that your luggage is a backpack rather than a cumbersome suitcase, which gives you the freedom to move quickly and at a moment's notice. A backpack can be stuffed into small places such as crowded buses or small cars. As a result, backpackers have developed a reputation of traveling anywhere, anytime- finding those places off the beaten track. Backpackers in the early sixties and seventies might be considered modern day pioneers. Nowadays, a steady stream of backpackers are flooding countries like Thailand, Laos and Cambodia creating a network of "backpacker trails." The high volume of travel in these countries is well deserved and the infrastructure for tourism is well established making it far easier to travel independently even for first-time travelers. Backpacking travel is not just for young adults, but for all adults and families wanting to explore the world up close and personal. Enjoy the freedom that independent backpackers have, while taking advantage of the benefits of traveling in a small group, such as cheaper private transportation and group support. GBT takes a maximum of 12 and a minimum of seven people per tour in addition to the host guide and assistant.

Exploring the world on a budget Traveling the world can be affordable if you are willing to stay away from expensive hotels and luxury transportation. GBT finds clean, comfortable and affordable lodging for you, often with surprising perks. Staying in five star hotels or resorts and taking luxury transport can separate you from being fully exposed to the culture and from experiencing the vibrancy of day to day life. One of GBT's goals is to give travelers the opportunity to really get to know the destination as much as possible given the time frame of a tour structure. So how do you get to know the people and their culture? GBT does this in many ways: Firstly, we give the traveler free time to explore the area with no obligation to join day tours etc. This allows the traveler time to explore the city, town or countryside and absorb the sights, sounds and smells of each place. GBT likes to use public land or water transport, such as local buses or ferries. It can be quite an experience to travel on some of the local buses. It is a great way to absorb the atmosphere and experience people living their daily lives. In many of the trips we have a two or three day stay in a village, which is a great way to learn more about subsistence and traditional way of living. And of course, knowing about a place is also about exploring and experiencing the parks; natural environment areas; beaches; entertainment and historic sites. These activities often become highlights of trips. There are many beaches, temples and historic ruins that are not well known, but are spectacular. A good example of this is the Bagan temples in Myanmar. Over 2000 temples are scattered throughout the area making it a world class attraction. The beaches in the Philippines are simply stunning and can often be deserted. And, last but not least, you can always find entertainment or restaurants with your fellow travelers to end a good day of traveling.
